So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
— Romans 10:17 (KJV)
Jonah, a prophet of God, refused God’s command to go to Nineveh to preach and pronounce judgement against the people’s evil works. As there was a possibility of repentance for the people of Nineveh, Jonah was prejudiced and unforgiving while God intended to show the people mercy. Jonah’s defiance was costly and deceptive — in a similar way, we suppress truth and love disobedience. But God is divine and will not be mocked! He responded strongly by sending out a storm that caused even the sailors to turn from their pagan idols, cry to the Lord and repent! God, being merciful and patient, rescued those on the ship and preserved Jonah in a big fish. In our case, we can find mercy and forgiveness in Jesus Christ, the substitute God provided. Let us remember that the word preached is a message of mercy to us — may we humbly serve God!
