When God cursed Satan and mankind in Genesis 3, the curse on Adam was to eat his bread by the sweat of his brow because work will be cursed. We see the effects of that curse in workaholism and also in sloth. But in Christ, the Christian can have a redeemed understanding of his worldly vocation and how to find rest in Christ and joy in his work.
God gave the Sabbath Day to his covenant people of old. Along with the Jubilee Year, the Sabbath was a symbol to the people to rest in God and to trust in him for all of their provision while they live life on earth. The Christian has been given the Lord’s Day as a reminder that Jesus rose and ascended on the first day of the week, the Spirit was given on the first day of the week at Pentecost, and the Apostle John caught a vision of heaven on the first day of the week. If Christians celebrate the Lord’s Day biblically, their souls find rest and are excited for the kingdom to come.
The Christian’s goal and ultimate destiny is to be in the New Heavens and New Earth, to worship God for an eternity, where their eternal labors consist of praise and thanksgiving. We are taught that all things are restored to man in that eternal rest, where man has highest dignity in God’s kingdom above.
