Why Church Retreat?

Adapted from PV dated 5 May 2019, by Elder Leong Yew Hoong

“Church Retreat” is a fixture in our annual Church Calendar. The purpose of this PV is to persuade you to key “Church Retreat” into your calendar.

No other appointments in your calendar come close to what a Church Retreat can do for you: (1) substantial ‘getting-away’; (2) intensive ‘getting-into’; and (3) prolonged ‘getting-together’. It is true that some of your appointments target one of the above features – as examples, family holidays may do (1) quite well, as in, allow you to get away from the buildup of work – or study-related stresses; reading a good book provides an experience in (2) in terms of focused study into a specific theological topic; participation in a care group approximates (3) where we come together to learn from and care for one another.

I never read Hebrews 12 the same way again thereafter because of the insights about “worship” that the Lord was pleased to show me in that retreat...

But none of the above activities by itself does (1), (2), and (3). Only the Church Retreat does all three. And, from my experience, if well-used, these three are helpful for this effect: deep, edifying insights into the things of God that can change how we conduct our Christian walk. Take, for example, the theme of “Worship” in the 2017 Church Camp. I never read Hebrews 12 the same way again thereafter because of the insights about “worship” that the Lord was pleased to show me in that Retreat – having a substantial getaway (i.e., (1)) frees my mind from the cares of regular work to focus intensively (i.e., (2)) into the different vital facets of what worship entails.

But it was not merely deep within-self reflections; I found that the discussions over the same topic (i.e., (3)) – both formally during discussion time and informally over meals – serve as sharpening iron to refine the truths into forms that are practical and deep-lying in the heart. Thank God that He is pleased to use the means of the Retreat to forge deep convictions based on His Word and through the insights obtained from fellowship.

If the above is not sufficient to persuade you, I add now further incentives that are unique to the coming Retreat 2024: (A) for the second time, we will hold Family Conversation (FC) sessions during the Retreat. We understand that FC sessions held during the Lord’s Day CI slots are very short due to time constraint. We were thus not able to provide opportunities for more two-way “conversations”. In the Retreat, we have more time (especially in the first part of the afternoons) and so we can speak to one another in a more relaxed “family” environment about strategic topics that matter to every one of us as members of the church. The FC in the Retreat does not replace the FC sessions that we normally conduct on the Lord’s Day (roughly on a quarterly basis) but it gives an extended contextual runway to delve more deeply into the important issues of discussion.

Personally, I have found such interactions beyond the boundary of the local church very enriching – it opens up our perspectives on the applications of the Reformed Faith...

Let’s pencil in “Church Retreat” 18 - 21 June 2024 into our calendar – now.
